Just because a self confessed beauty junkie has a zillion followers on Instagram does not mean that the IG makeup tutorials they’re showing you are correct, or even the only technique for you. - Nerida Beardsell
It’s true, a little lipstick never killed anyone. But for many teenage girls new to makeup, putting your face on can seem like a foreign language. It can be intimidating and very confusing. But with professional makeup artist Nerida Beardsell, the world of makeup doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, it can be a blast!
Born and bred in Melbourne, Nerida is a professional freelance makeup artist and hair stylist, with over 15 years industry experience to her name. She’s worked with many top brands like bareMinerals, Ellis Faas, Hourglass, Lou Lou Lips, Perricone MD, RMS Beauty, Smashbox Cosmetics, Stila Cosmetics, Urban Decay, By Terry, and Chantecaille on acting and modelling portfolios, runways and catwalks, bridal shoots, and even film and tv. And now, she’s on WeTeachMe to teach her workshops, starting with this makeup masterclass for teens.
With a true passion for artistry and styling, she never feels like work is ever work! When she’s not applying makeup and styling hair, Nerida loves spending lazy Sundays with her husband and two kids.
Ready to spice up your makeup kit and beauty routine?
Why are you passionate about makeup? What do you love most about working as a professional makeup artist?
I see makeup as a form of expression and extension of one’s personality, just as you choose how to dress or accessorise based on your mood. Makeup allows you to complement your overall look, whether it be a simple everyday look to enhance your natural features, or something a little more bold and colourful or dark and smokey for a special occasion.
I love seeing the look of excitement on my client’s face during and after their makeup transformation – seeing how a makeover can completely lift their mood and self-confidence, whether it’s me who’s applying a client’s makeup or my student learning to apply their own makeup.
Whenever I do a fashion-shoot or runway makeup, the thrill of pushing boundaries to create something totally original and amazing, then to see it in print or live on stage – well, what’s not to love about that!

Why a makeup masterclass for teens?
Over the years I’ve received many requests, from both teenagers and their parents, to offer these classes. Demand for such classes has grown considerably over the past couple of years, especially considering the presence of social media and its impact on how people perceive beauty and image.
When do you think is the right age for a teenager to wear makeup?
As I am a professional makeup artist, it may surprise you to know that I didn’t wear a lot of makeup as a teenager. I was maybe 15 or 16 years old when I started wearing it, and even then, I always had a less-is-more kind of attitude towards makeup – mainly just wearing it for special occasions.
I think Essential Kids makes a solid point: “Perhaps the age old battle between girls and makeup is one we shouldn’t aim to win, but one we should aim to educate our girls on.” My daughter Maddy is 15 years old and I Iove teaching her about how to put on makeup.

Teenagers feel pressured to change their personal appearance based on what they see on social media. What do you think about all this?
Just because a self confessed beauty junkie has a zillion followers on Instagram does not mean that the IG makeup tutorials they’re showing you are correct, or even the only technique for you.
Unfortunately the attitude on social media is that the more makeup the better. IF you’re in the entertainment industry, there may be some truth to this. However, how we apply our everyday makeup in reality for face-to-face interaction is completely different.
My class will teach the correct technique to apply makeup that looks like your own skin – remember, it’s all about “enhancing not covering up”.
I encourage students to bring their personal makeup products and brush collection to this masterclass. They don’t need to buy anything! They’ll learn how to multi-purpose their makeup products, for a more time efficient and cost-effective application, as well as correct use of various makeup products and brushes.
I will offer individual guidance and feedback on what products they may like to add (or get rid of) to their personal makeup collection. I also have a large makeup kit to utilise during class if there are products they don’t have but would like to test out.
Are your classes only for girls, or can boys attend as well?
Of course – boys are more than welcome to attend. Classes are age appropriate, hands-on, informative – but most importantly FUN! After the class, attendees will feel confident to reproduce the looks at home.
Finally, what is your favourite makeup tip/trick?
One of the most important tips and tricks I teach in a masterclass is how to camouflage blemishes and imperfections, for a flawless yet natural-looking complexion and weightless finish. Students will learn how to apply makeup that looks like their own skin!
Less is more! When creating a flawless looking complexion for a beautiful finish, it’s more about enhancing natural features rather than covering them up.
Learn to do makeup for every look!
