Today, few of us know anyone who works as a blacksmith anymore, that’s because much of the work blacksmiths used to do has been automated and moved into factories. But blacksmithing has recently come back into vogue, particularly as a hobby rather than a line of work. The resurgence of the popularity of this archaic profession is mainly due to its appeal to hipsters, who tend to embrace a distinctive array of old-timey endeavours.

So what first is blacksmithing?

Blacksmithing is the craft of heating metal (steel or iron) in an incredibly hot forge to soften it, and then hammered and bent to make artefacts and sculptures. Blacksmiths make a huge range of different objects, from industrial tools to decorative items. If that doesn’t make you feel manly, we don’t know what else will.

It’s not an easy thing to do, but blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and its a rewarding hobby at that too. If you want to learn how to create using molten metal, Eveleigh Works teaches a masterclass at their workshop. The Blacksmiths Toolbox Masterclass isn’t just an excuse to have a whack at metal or to play with fire, but rather, it will teach you how to make blacksmithing your new hobby, right down to where to get the proper tools, and how to forge steel.

Over the duration of the class you will have made a round of some of pretty cool stuff you can take home, like a hammer, top and bottom fullers, a hardy hot cut and more. Visit the link below for more details.
