Ikebana, the art of Japanese floral arranging, may fill your mind with thoughts of kimonos, cherry blossoms, and intricate tea ceremonies behind delicate shōji doors. But Japanese floral artist Azumi Ishikawa is out to challenge this stereotype.

Azumi was born to an ikebana master and learned to appreciate floral art, even as a child. Inspired by her mum, she knew at a young age that she would be one day working with flowers. From her hometown of Osaka, she took her creative interest further and studied modern techniques in Munich, Germany. After four years, she came home and emerged as one of Tokyo’s most celebrated floral designers, sought after by top personalities and brands in the Japanese capital.

Now based here in Melbourne, Azumi has been busy creating arrangements for retail shops, events, and weddings. And because creativity is contagious, she set up byAzumi, her own lovely studio in South Yarra, where she teaches classes in beginner’s floristry, design principles, wedding design and planning, and more. She also holds one-day workshops on how to create kokedama, garden bouquets, and other floral masterpieces.
