All that glitters is not gold. In some cases, it could be both silver and gold. Of course, we’re talking about the ancient Korean gilding technique called Keum-boo (also Kum-Boo or Kum-bu—Korean “attached gold”).
This old process brings the warmth of gold and the coolness of silver together, creating a beautiful combination that can be seen in jewellery and other metal artworks. This result is achieved by fusing thin sheets of high carat gold into silver using heat and pressure. Keum-boo is a must-learn technique for any practising jeweller, if they want to take their creations to the next level.
SquarePeg Studios Winter Warmer Intensive classes in June will touch on this very technique. The class will be led by Diane Appleby, who completed her Master of Art in Gold and Silversmithing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and teaches Jewellery and Object Design in several notable institutes. Participants of the class will be taught Keum-boo and how to use it to construct a unique ring or another item of jewellery.
Winter Warmer: June Long Weekend Workshop runs on June 9th to June 11th, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Book now or find out more about the class in the link below.
